How is the index rent adjusted?
With an index rent (Indexmiete), the rent follows the consumer price index (CPI) of the Federal Statistical Office. The percentage change in the index is applied to the starting rent (§ 557b BGB).
How often may the index rent rise?
The rent must stay unchanged for at least one year each time. The cap (Kappungsgrenze) and the Mietpreisbremse (rent cap) generally do not apply to the index rent in the same way.
