Must the rental deposit earn interest?
Yes. The landlord must hold the deposit (Kaution) separately from their own assets at the interest rate usual for savings deposits with a three-month notice period (§ 551 para. 3 BGB). The interest belongs to the tenant.
When is the interest paid out?
The accrued interest increases the deposit and is paid out together with it after the tenancy ends.
